Posted: 27 Nov 2017 07:26 AM PST I'm fairly new to the Art subreddit and I'm having trouble trying understand what this place is all about. Some of the artwork here that gets the most upvotes involves some form of gimmick that the artist uses, almost like a sideshow magician. Once you really know art and have studied it to some extent, that type of artwork gets old really fast and doesn't hold much interest beyond a few seconds. I know that this probably won't be a popular thread, but isn't this place supposed to be more than just a circus sideshow? Don't get me wrong, I love a good gimmick every now and then just as much as the next guy, but it seems like that type of thing is usually held in higher regard than more serious forms of art with depth and artistic reasoning. Shouldn't we aspire to more than that? Isn't art supposed to reach higher than obvious trickery and magic-show deception? I feel that the more this type of 'gimmick art' gets upvoted, the more of it we are going to see until the real art eventually gets choked out altogether. Do you really like this kind of artwork and does it have a place here? Please share your thoughts on this matter and let me know what you think in the comments below. [link] [comments] | ||
